Langun-Gobingob Caves – “The Biggest Cave in the Philippines” – Calbiga, Samar

The Gobingob entrance (E1) and Langun entrance (E2) are commonly used, whereas E3-6 require ropes. Gobingob is the oldest and largest part of the cave. Its main chamber is huge, 340 by 140 metres at its widest points, and leads to an upper level which takes 2-4 hours to explore. The ‘Football Field’ is home to a blind fish unique to Samar’s caves.

Langun Cave is accessed via a 30 metre vertical descent which requires a safety harness. The gallery splits and a steep passage can be bypassed via the Tita Chamber, which contains giant chandeliers. Tita Chamber to the Langun main entrance is seasonally active so non-swimmers should use a life vest for deep pools. The Langun main chamber has a muddy floor which becomes mountains of guano near the impressive Langun entrance, so try to avoid getting stuck! At night thousands of bats exit the cave which is an incredible spectacle. It takes 1.5-3 hours from Gobingob to Langun entrances.

Lower Langun can be accessed via a four metre pitch which requires a knotted rope to descend. A short squeeze should be checked for snakes before entering. Upstream the river leads to a sump. Downstream a muddy gallery can be reached by climbing the western side of the river. The river leads to a sump, which requires a five metre rope to reach. The terminal cave section completely floods in high water so don’t cross the river then, and the squeeze near the entrance can completely fill, temporarily blocking the exit. It takes 4-6 hours to explore lower Langun, plus 1.5-2 hours extra for the upper muddy gallery.
